Stonewall is alive and well, and has been planning many exciting activities.
Grant update: The Unitarian-Universalist Church has responded favorably to our $8,000 grant request. A spokesperson said that the church is highly supportive of lesbian and gay civil rights issues. The purpose of this grant is to fund activities necessary to pass the Cleveland lesbiangay civil rights legislation. Stonewall needs further funds, however, to complete this project. Your personal financial contributions are encouraged and appreciated.
Spying: Several members of the lesbian-gay community recently engaged in a covert ploy: posing as both same-sex and opposite-sex couples, and attempting to rent apartments in random ares of Cleveland. Several instances of discrimination were encountered by the same-sex couples. These occurrences will provide specific data to present to Cleveland City Council in Stonewall's ongoing quest to enact anti-discrimination legislation.
Pride '92: Stonewall's Pride-eve event of last year, the wine and cheese political reception, was a huge success. We are planning to expand that concept this year and hold a formal dinner. We will invite local elected and campaigning politicians and allow them to present their views. All members of the lesbian-gay community are encouraged to attend this informative event.
Voter registration: Every gay and lesbian person in Northeast Ohio should be a registered voter. By becoming a registered voter, every gay and lesbian person can have a significant impact on laws and policies that affect his or her life. Stonewall plans to aggressively pursue this goal by making deputy registrars available at upcoming social events.
Film festival: Stonewall is planning to hold an annual film festival, featuring a combination of dramatic films and educational documentaries. Last year, we presented Before Stonewall and The Times of Harvey Milk. The festival will be held this year sometime in the spring.
Leadership forum: Stonewall is sponsoring, in conjunction with several other gay organizations, a leadership forum. The purpose of the forum is to discuss leadership strategies, how to create goals and achieve them, and fundraising for nonprofit organizations in these recessionary times.
Resignation: Mike Radice has resigned as president of Stonewall Cleveland. Stonewall is now in the process of determining and redefining the goals of our organization. A general direction has been determined: to increase the awareness of the Cleveland lesbian-gay community of political issues and motivation to become involved in these issues; and to focus on visibility, action, and relevance to the gay community.
Meetings: The next Stonewall Board meeting will be held Monday, February 17, at 7:30 p.m. The next general membership meeting will be held Monday, March 9, 7:30 p.m. at the Center. Call 781-6736 for further details. ▼
